HEART

To start off our human body project we did the heart. Here is some of what we did.

4 HEART FACTS

1. Your heart is the size your fist.
2. An adult's heart beats between 60 - 80 times a minute when they are resting.
3.You have 100,000km of blood vessels.
4.The heart of a new born baby beats 120 -160 times a minute.

In the picture above we are looking at how you blood goes in the heart one way and comes out the other.

PROBLEMS WITH THE HEART

HEART ATTACKS

Cause - Most heart attacks occur as a result of coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD is the buildup over time of a material called plaque on the inner walls of the coronary arteries. Eventually, a section of plaque can break open, causing a blood clot to form at the site. A heart attack occurs if the clot becomes large enough to cut off most or all of the blood flow through the artery.

4 ways to help prevent a heart attack

1. Eat a low fat healthy diet with lots of vegetables and fruit!

2. Lower your salt intake!

3. Quit smoking!

4. Do physical activities to improve your heart fitness!

Story Time!

Here is a little story I did today, hope you like it! -

A young girl called Tilly was walking, walking alone.
Bombs dropping like rain drops all around her.
Tilly was scared, but she did not show it.
Tilly never showed what she felt, even when her house was bombed, she was told that her Mum and Dad had gone with it and that she had no were to go, not once did little Tilly cry.
As Tilly walked people ran, ran from the bombs.
Tilly walked to the bombs. She did not care anymore, she did not find Hitler and his silly little moustache funny anymore, like she used to, she hated Hitler more than anything in this horrid world she lived in and at the moment where bombs were falling all around her, Tilly wanted nothing more than to leave the world she lived in. Just like her parents had, just like everybody she loved and cared about had.
Tilly keep ed walking.
She had not stopped in day and was not planning to stop anytime soon, not until Hitler was dead, not until she had killed Hitler. She would never stop walking.

The Scarecrow Festival

On Sunday the band and I did a performance at Dunston Scarecrow festival and we had to dress up as scarecrows, so we all looked really funny!
And some of the scarecrows around the village looked great, my favourite was the Strictly Come Dancing one! When we got home we were thinking about what we would do and I said I would make a Harry Potter on his broomstick, what would you do?

How To Help Bees !

1. Plant More Flowers - You could start planting more flowers in your garden.

2. Don't Dig Up Your Hedge - Leave your hedge alone. the bees love it.

3. Leave Some Land Alone - If you own a field, garden or any piece of land you could let some of it or all of it grow wild.
4. Be careful Were You Spray Insecticides - If you spray insecticide near a hive, on flower/plant or on a bee you could really harm or kill the it.

5. Buy And Support Your Local Honey Or Beekeeper - If you support you beekeeper he or she will be able to help or keep more bees.

Save The Bees

Why are bees so important?

Bees not only make us wonderful honey, but they also pollinate flowers, trees and some of the foods we eat, so if they were to become extinct not only would we not have any honey we would have less trees, flowers and food like -apples,beans,blackcurrants,cucumber,onions and loads more!

Why Are Our Bees Dying ?

1. Diseases - Because bees live in hives, if one bee becomes ill there is no-where he or she can go,without infecting the other bees that live in the hive.

2. Varroe Mite - The varroe mite sucks blood out of bees and as it does this it passes on a virus to the bee.
3. Insecticides - Insecticide is used to kill insects and could harm bees if used incorrectly.

4. Changing Weather - Because of the wet summers we have been having plants and flowers have been growing at different times than they normally do, so bees can't get the nectar they need to stay alive.
5. Not enough hedges and flowers.- People are planting less and less flowers, digging up hedges and turning fields full of wild flowers into fields full of animals or crops.

So why don't we all go and do something to SAVE OUR BEES!

Film Report

Anne Franks Diary

What was it about? - A young girl called Anne and her family had to go in to hiding because the Nazis were taking all the Jaws to concentration camps, while the Franks are there they are joined by the Van Pels family and fritx pefeffer. After two years the families were found,no one knows know tolled on them or why they did, but in the end only one person survived and that was Anne's Dad Otto Frank.

Was the storyline good? -Yes. I think the way they tolled the story was very good.

Was the acting good? - Again yes, Ellie Kendrick ( who played Anne) was very good and when you look at Anne and Ellie they both look very alike and the other actors was great. For a complete list of who plays who go to - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Frank_(BBC_television_serial)

My thoughts on what happened to Anne Frank -
I think it is very sad that people had to go in to hiding because they did not believe or look like Hitler wanted them to. Anne and her family were in hiding for 2 years, when Anne and her sister Margo died there father Otto Frank had been out of the Auschwitz concentration camp for 6 weeks. I have not yet read the book,is it good?

Anne Frank

Carries War

What was it about? - Carrie and her brother Nick are evacuated to Wales during the Second World War. They stay with Mr. Evans and his younger sister Auntie Lou. While Carrie and Nick are there they befriend another evacuee who is staying with Mr.Evans other sister.
The housekeeper at of the house were there friend is staying tell the children many stores and amongst them is one about a cursed skull in the library.

Who was your favourite cater / actor? - Well... all the actors were very good but my favourite was Carrie, the person that played Carrie made her very believable and like she real existed

WW2 Resources

Book Review

Name of the book - The Diary Of A Young Nurse In World War 2

By - Moira Butterfield

Date finished reading book - 17.6.09

Book Rating - 8 out of 10

The main characters - Jean, Cessie, Marge, Matron and Rick.
Storyline - A young girl called Jean goes to work in a hospital in London to help with the growing number of patients from the war. She keeps her diary as much as she can, telling you about nurse exams, her love for Fred Astaire, dealing with WW2 and lots more about what is going on in her life.

My favourite bit - Is when Jean and Rick dance together as Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth.

Sum it up in a few words - OK, good and interesting.

Would you change the end - No. I think the ending was good and finished at the right time, the end of World War 2.It did explain how long it took for rationing to end, food rations lasted until 1950.

Review - All together this book was a good read. It told you more about WW2 ,what peoples thoughts were about what was going on, how they kept their hopes up and how they improvised things that were on ration eg paint legs to look as if you're wearing stockings, use burnt cork as eyelash mascara and powdered eggs.So if you are doing about WW2 this is a good book to read.

My potatoes are getting really big now.
Here are the new measurements -
Vales Emerald 1 is 37 cm high
VE 2 is 36 cm high
Rocket 1 is 29 cm high

I now think VE1 will do the best because it is the biggest and looks healthy.
How are all your potatoes doing ?

Potato Diary - 4

Remember my potato experiment, well it did not work! But we did not paint the inside of the box black, so if you have a go paint it black and tell me how it goes.

My potato plants are doing really well now. Here are the measurements -
Vales Emerald 1 is 11cm high
Vales Emerald 2 is 15 cm high
Rocket 1 is 8 cm high
Rocket 2 is only 4 cm high!

I have had a few comments questions about why I had carrot and cheese sandwiches, it is because in WW2 cheese was rationed, so they would put carrot in the sandwich to make the cheese go further.
I also had a question about my favourite part of the WW2 day ,my top 4 thing were -
1 feeding baby lambs
2 holding baby rabbits
3 digging for victory
4 was seeing friends!
Also the potato plant that will be produce the most potatoes, I think it will be Vales Emerald 2 because it's the biggest and looks very healthy.

Evacuee Day at Rushmoor Country Park

On Monday I went to an evacuee day at Rushmoor.
We all had to dress up as if we were children in WW2.The first thing we did was write a postcard to our mums about what we were doing and how we got there,we also made a gas mask box( that we had to carry with us all day) Then we planted some seeds (thyme, carrot, parsnip and spinach) then we digged for victory (shown below).
For lunch I had a carrot and cheese sandwich.
In the afternoon we had a tour of all the animals we fed goats and baby lambs,I got to hold a 15 week old rabbit (it was tiny). We saw some baby pigs,a cow, mice, rats and a horse called Silver.
We sat in an Anderson Shelter.
At the end of the day we all got a ride on a pony called Noddy.http://www.rushmoorpark.co.uk/
